Air Filter Neck and Dynas - Cut?
I was trying to stuff my air filter back in my '78 GL1000 this afternoon, and it's always been a tight fit, but with the Dyna-type coils and wires in there, do you have to cut the air filter neck to get it in, and what does that surgery do - anything detrimental?

Actually, I managed to get it stuffed back in there, with just a slight deviation of the coil wire! Good to know though.

not sure what you are talkig about. Ihavent had mine off in some time. But there is some internal channeling for the breather fuction. The crank case breaths it's fume into the carb to be re-burned. Could be related to that.Dr. Frankenstein wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 6:08 pm It doesn't seem to go to anything except get in the way of trying to get the air filter housing in...

just looked up a picture of the air cleaner. Bolt seems to hold an internal piece, relating to the fume breatherCYBORG wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 9:08 pmnot sure what you are talkig about. Re: Air Filter Neck and Dynas - Cut?
I thought he was referring to the snorkel part of the air cleaner box. I cut about an inch of the end to allow for the coil update when I installed some 1100 coils. That was a recommendation from someone on this forum several years ago.

I was referring to the bolt head he said was on the left side of the filter housing. On mine the snorkel is shortened
and has a hose which draws air from a hole in the front of the fairing. It preasurises the air box. More speed, more pressure. The crank case lines are seal. Crank case is vented thru a seprate filter

Re: Air Filter Neck and Dynas - Cut?
10 years ago, I had the similar question. Wound up judiciously slicing off maybe 5/8inch, at an angle, off the lower half of the air inlet on my 1975 air filter housing.Dr. Frankenstein wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 4:53 pm I was trying to stuff my air filter back in my '78 GL1000 this afternoon, and it's always been a tight fit, but with the Dyna-type coils and wires in there, do you have to cut the air filter neck to get it in, and what does that surgery do - anything detrimental?
I had a short piece of split wire loom at hand. I placed it on the spark plug wire, too. Just in case

Re: Air Filter Neck and Dynas - Cut?
Cliff - I just did all that, loom included. It does make it a lot easier to get the air filter housing in.
