Radiator Shrouds

#1

Post by SaesnegShaun »

My 78 is missing its rad shrouds. Their rare on uk ebay but plenty in the states for 75 - 77 bikes. Part numbers vary between the models but are they all the same apart from colour?

Also same goes for seats. Are they different between 77 and 78 models?

Thanks Guys

Rad shrouds will fit, difference is only color. Heck, I think the 1100 shrouds will bolt up too (if you want chrome), but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

'75/'76, '77, and '78/'79 are different on top, but as far as I know the pans are identical, so will bolt up to any bike.

The shrouds all interchange ! The seats have a small difference in the front edge. The 78/79 will fit on the 75-77’s but the 75-77’s will not fit on the 78-79’s. When you see a 78-79 on the earlier bike you will notice that the front edge of the seat is tapered back at the bottom probably about 1/2” ( w/o measuring it) it’s because of the back edge of the shelter panel on the 78 & 79’s.

On the seats, IMHO the 77 (same as the 76 LtD) is probably the most comfortable , but the 78/79’s have dual density foam and are pretty comfy as well, I have a 78 seat on my 76.

The oe 75 & 76’s are just ball busters, basically just upholstered logs, very bad, but valuable these days because most people threw them away.

Are you talking about the Radiator Covers that bolt to the sides of the rad, the fan shroud or the shroud that sits behind the fan to deflect the air to the sides?

Since you mentioned different colours, I think you mean the radiator covers. While they look like they would help direct air through the radiator, so far as I can tell they are purely decorative and not necessary for the operation of the bike.
FWIW, mine started life as an 1100 Interstate that sat for a decade and had a seized engine when I got it so I put the engine &c from my wrecked 1000 into it. The Interstate's fairing lowers cover the sides of the rad so Interstate's don't have the covers and one of the first things I did was remove the fairing and use it on the winter bike I was putting together at the time so I couldn't mount the lowers on my 'Wing. I can't remember whether I tried attaching the radiator covers from the 1000 to the 1100's rad but either way they were in poor shape so I decided to leave them off.
I ran that 1000 engine with the 1100 rad (basically the same as a 1000 rad) without those covers from '97 until I changed to an 1100 engine in 2018 and the only heat related issue it had was when the can switch failed.
The rad from the bike my 1100 engine came from has the covers but I see no reason to add something that only makes the rad look bigger.
