Spin-on oil filter adapter for 79 GL1000
I'm thinking of getting the spin-on oil filter adapter for my 79.

I'm guessing some of you have done this. Question is, what filters are y'all using with it? The sales listing doesn't really specify.

Good choice to get a spin on conversion. In the pictures located in the link, an example of a filter is a Fram PH2951. Cross reference that filter with your favorite brand.
In another area on the link provided, there was this: “Note: No filter is included in the kit. We sell the Hi-Flo HF171 Filters for this application A high capacity filter with an anti-drain back valve. See related items to order these.”
Hope that helps you a little.

Once you figure out the sealing diameter and the thread pitch, you can go wild figuring out which filter to use. Bigger ones will allow for more oil capacity, there's some reusable ones with sexy finned covers, you can use Amsoil chrome filters to make things pop. Choice is yours really!

Re: Spin-on oil filter adapter for 79 GL1000
Thanks for all the advice! Part of the reason I ask is because I bought a large quantity of oil filters from a tractor and truck shop going out of business back in 2019 and a few of them are regular automotive ones that aren't worth trying to sell on ebay. I figure I could use them on the bike. Will have to see how they line up when I get the adapter.

I think someone once had a chart showing cross-reference of many filters to thread size and such.

I'm surprised at how many of the group use Fram filters as they have bad
reviews in numerous tests.
OTOH NAPA's Wix 51348 and Gold 1348 fit the converter and seems to be well
respected in the automotive industry.
Just sayin'

Cardboard end caps, coarse filter media, buna anti drain back valves that harden - standard Fram oil filters aren't very good.

Re: Spin-on oil filter adapter for 79 GL1000
Cyborg, I’ve been cutting oil filters apart for a few years now because of some of the “internet” claims, particularly about the fram’s.
I can say that most all are true, Fram at one point used cardboard anti drain back valves, but I haven’t seen that in a few years now. They do generally use cardboard end caps but a few others do as well, the thing that really worries me about Fram is the number of them that had significant rust and nasty burrs in them. I have cut a few new ones open as well to see if the burrs & rust were from new or over time, it was therein new as well.
The thing that really turned me off to Fram is that I used to use the high performance Fram HP2’s in my big block Ford hot rod because they were spec’d for having bigger & thicker cans to protect against high oil pressure ballooning which they do BUT Fram uses the standard filter internals with the standard relief valve so my Ford with 80 psi of oil pressure was in constant relief so the oil just bypass’d the filter media. Also there is a significant amount less filter media in the Fram filters.
So let me add that a number of oe vehicle oil filters are indeed Fram regardless of what’s on the outside of the can. My 2016 Subaru oe filter was indeed a Fram even though it was painted blue with the Subaru labeling and all Subaru filters I’ve cut open are indeed Fram’s.
So what filters are the best in my opinion, any of the Wix brand filters are by far the best constructed, also I like the Mobil1 filters which are very well made as well as the K+N branded filters (surprised me) . I personally use either Mobil1 or Wix, just better made.
So that’s my take on oil filters, as always it’s your money and your bike but imho Fram really just sucks.

Re: Spin-on oil filter adapter for 79 GL1000
Thanks for tht insight. I have never cut a filter open. Have used fram's for years. I must admit, sadly, that price is an consideration. However I change my bike filters at 1000 miles, and my cars at 2000 miles. I know, seems foolish. But just a habit I have gotton into. With half a million miles on my 78, good compression, and oil preasure, no smoke, etc., I have not experienced problems with the Fram brand filters. In the case of the bikes I must admit that the size, and look of the filter Has been a concern. (my bad). I may have to re-think my cheapness a little

I would be concerned about the pressure relief valve inside the spin on filter being a different specification than the original.

Re: Spin-on oil filter adapter for 79 GL1000
good point. But I always thought the relief valve, ws a protection for higher pressures. Goldwings of the earlier vintage hardly suffer from that. Tht being said, at start up, my 78 carries 70 lbs. pluse at 1000 RPM
