I'm just going to assume at that point they didn't expect anyone to do their own work anymore and just take it to a dealership, so they made EVERYTHING difficult. The air filter on my Valkyrie was bad enough.

Always a good Idea to mention about the JIS vs Phillips head type screws and the corresponding drivers for both.
I am long aware and have a nice set. You only need to try once to remove a stuck brake fluid resevior screw to become a believer - like I did! BTW, Harbor Frieght has a nice set for under $10.00 . here is a link:

Not to hijack the thread, but I am attempting to drill out, tap, and helicoil the threads for the neutral switch retaining bolt. Is there any feasible way to do this without removing the engine? I know spreading the frame won't be enough.
This bolt started to strip out when I replaced the neutral switch, and now it leaks a not-so-insignificant amount of oil.

Just wanted to add that prying the frame away from the neutral switch can be done
as I stupidly tried to repair the old one, but finally just replaced it. So, multiple times.
I tapped a wooden
wedge in enough to access the switch. Oh yeah, on my 79....

sidecarbob: regarding the Harbor Freight set. Correct, there is no mention that they are JIS drivers, but they in fact are!
and thats a great price for JIS drivers!
several years back, on another forum (for VT500 ascots) a fellow posted some pics of the driver heads from this set, and indeed they are JIS. Once you try one on a stuck screw, you'll agree, so much better than a #2 phillips..

It's hard to tell from the pics but they might be. I've found screwdrivers that work well with JIS heads in unlikely places in the past, including at $1 stores.
