one cilynder low compression

#1

Post by bassrad »

Hello all,

I am looking into finding the new engine, but in the meantime, is there any remedy for the low compression on one cylinder. It is killing my sparkplugs way too often.

It is bike I drive for years so it wouldn't be stuck rings. Leak test came clean.

Thanks all,

Hello 👋
Low compression is how much too low?
What is the compression test results of all 4 cylinders?
You HAVE checked valve lash clearances first before testing aĺl 4 cylinders' cranking compression? Yes?

The spark plugs are being killed by what?
The leak test came clean? :-?
What is all 4 cyĺinders' individual ĺeak dòwn rate test results, Percentage number?

Hello GLTRIKER
Thanks for the response. I should know better and post a bit more info from the getgo.
I did all the tests couple of years ago and was mostly riding my BMW since, but still love my GL and want to make it run as good as it can.
I do not remember all the numbers, but I think 160 on 3 cylinders and 120 on the one in question. I will double check. Friend did my leak test as I do not have the gizmo and there was no significant leak on any of the cylinders.
Plug just seem oily and after changing it the engine runs fine for a period of time.
That cylinder was problematic since I got the bike 5-6 years ago, but not this bad. Since I got the bike I upgraded the ignition and coils to DYNA, new carbs set, cleaned and balanced.
Not sure what else could be the problem.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

okay. Let's go. Which cylinder number are we investigating?
- Looking back through your Topics history (2018) I gather it's cylinder #2.

Check valve lash clearances. FIRST
Although controversial, set intake and exhaust lash clearances at 0.006 inch.
THEN
Retest all 4 cylinders cranking compression, again. Fully charged battery. Choke OFF. Throttle held wide open.
Record the results of each cylinder cranking compression tested.

One more thing you should do when you do the compression test: Remove the four intake screws where you insert the carb sync tubes. This will let more air into the cylinders. It is hard to get an accurate test with the GL1000, but this helps a lot. Do the things that Cliff suggested too.
