Question about Dynatech

#1

Post by 6adan »

I am wondering if a bad battery can cause my 75 to miss and go dead at idle? I have a dyna on, but it just does not idle good. it is a old battery that will read 12,5v but when I put a tender on it. it will never show charged.

Replace the battery. First.

When you get a new battery, Always fully and correctly charge it before connecting it to your vehicle's battery cables.

okay, I've edited out the battery tender stuff tumb2

Try it at idle with the tender attached. I do that quite often when doing tuning work just to eliminate a weak charging system causing issues while extended idling.

Yo GL: I've always given my batteries an initial charge with a battery tender without problems. Those things are finicky sometimes though. I had a tender on my tractor and it always showed charging. I figured the tender was kaput but I switched the tractor one with one on my CB750. Now both show green. I hate electronics.

Yo, yo self tlbranth

looking back in 6adan's older Topics history, I had noted another 12.5 volt battery installed in a 75 GL1000 was mentioned.
Perhaps, the same one?

upon second, and third, and forth thoughts I have edited out my original battery tender comment. ;)

A while ago we had this discussion regarding low voltages and a Dyna, so I called Dyna and if I recall correctly the guys there told me that the Dyna is indeed voltage sensitive and requires at least 13v (if I remember correctly) to run correctly. So as the guy’s above stated you need to fix this first.

Also, where have you got the Dyna powered from, they (Dyna) recommend using the turn signal switched line which is not the best source so find another full powered switched source to power your Dyna, do a search here as there has been numerous discussions about using different power sources for the Dyna.

The Dyna is very voltage sensitive and running with low voltage can damage it. I power mine from the accessory port with a relay switched by the kill switch.

I want to thank everyone for the help. It seems it was low voltage it is now running just fine. I have been working on two different 75s lately both having Dyna problems I thought, one was the other was the low voltage problem. Dannie

Kind of late, but Dynatech recommends trying a direct line of 12 volts to the Dyna. Safest way per my knowledge (highly limited) is a relay intercepting the current dyna feed, triggered to a fused source from the battery. As memory serves me, they are supposed to operate from 10v to 17ish volts. Any higher and the magic smoke escapes, any less and they die or idle poorly.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I'm seeing lots of reasons here to stick with points and a Hondaman box.

Good plan, but remember to keep the points cam lubed. With the electrical wear gone, mechanical wear is still there on the rubbing blocks.

I see so many posts on here where someone says "electronic ignition" and then spits, with the implication that the points are always better. Then I read British bike mags where they almost always pitch the original Lucas system into the weeds and put on an electronic replacement. Guess we never knew how good we had it, from new. 😁

Lucas satisfies that argument.

Points on British twins aren't too bad. They're a nightmare on the triples. I used to be ambivalent to whether a bike has points or an electronic ignition conversion, but the difficulty in finding quality replacement point sets has made EI more attractive to me.
