Valvetrain noise?

#1

Post by sphen »

Listen to this - tune out the exhaust sound and the ticking of the fuel pump, and you’ll hear a clattering/whining noise.

At first I thought it might be a timing belt idler failing, but if I get close it’s coming from the valve cover. Seems to amplify a bit with downshift/engine braking.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about it, you do know that the 1200 motor has hydraulic lifters and require no adjustments, but that said I’m sure that there is some setup to eliminate any looseness. One of the valves may need a small amount of adjustment but like I said I personally wouldn’t worry about it. How many miles on your current oil change ?

I will keep going no worries - just with it being a recent restomod, I’m paranoid about every little thing :-/

Sphen, I don’t think anything’s wrong but at some point when you have nothing to do, pull up a stool with an adult beverage and the factory service manual and maybe go through the factory procedure for setting the valves on your 1200, they are indeed hydraulic lifters but maybe they are a bit loose, just maybe. But again I think you just need to ride it.

Sounds like an idler to me. Easy to check. Although tight, I believe you can pull the belt without removing anything but the covers to spin and check the idler. There are a few other items that could have come loose under the covers, ignition? Clips for wire harnesses? Even the bolt holding the pulley on the cam can walk off.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
