Helmet Locks

#1

Post by redglbx »

So I acquired a custom 78 1000 that has a long history with the CWC club, it has no helmet locks on it, probably having been removed back years ago when originally built.

So I have another 78 that I can pull the helmet locks off of and my question is has anyone rekeyed a set of locks to match the ignition key ? I have no keys for the donor bike and quite frankly would like to just have a single key in the end, is this a pipe dream ? Is there a procedure someplace for doing this myself or can I take them to a locksmith to have this done ? Thanks in advance.

So one more question. Are the wafers the same for the helmet locks or all the locks for that matter? I know the key profiles differ but if the wafers are the same I have 2 donor sets, the 78’s that I plan to use on the bike and a 75 set from a parts bike. If they’re the same then I have more “wafers” to mix & match. Should be fun, Something new.

Roncar (the author of that post) is the expert on the keys and locks. He has not been on the site in a long time but you can send him an email and ask him. I have never played with that stuff.

Well WF, I just got the First one basically done and stopped for some lunch. Your ears shoulda been burning ! So I’m sitting there at my bench and just cannot get them apart, cussing a bit and getting seriously frustrated as I just couldn’t get the tumbler(s) out. So I stopped and went back and reread your procedure at which point I realized I missed a small detail where the tumbler push’s out through the front not the back 😳🙄🙄🙄,,, just a little operator error 😱 !

Also just an FYI, the 75 locks are a little different than the 78’s ,the 78’s are a little simpler overall but basically the same, the 75’s the backs screw on whereas the 78’s the cover is swaged. I might just tap the housing on the 78’s. It’s been a bit of a learning experience and something fun on a damp rainy day,,, thankyou 😁
