The stuff I used in the bicycle tire was marketed specifically to prevent flat tires and intended to be left in all the time. I don't recall ever being concerned about balancing bicycle tires and tubeless bicycle tires were not available yet so it would never come in contact with the rim unless a spoke caused the puncture and even then very little of it would.

The stuff I used in the motorcycle tire (Fix A Flat) is for emergency repair and primarily for cars, most of which had tubeless tires by then ('85). Since it is not supposed to be left in the tire for more than 3 days or 160 Km they make no claim about balance and it shouldn't be in a tire long enough to corrode the rim.

Great biography Richard. Thanks for the information. So since sudden pressure loss at the rim is quite unlikely, the worries are at the valve stem and punctures. I see the likelihood of a nasty event being a tossup, tube or tubeless. I prefer the classic, and correct, look of wire wheels but hate installing tubes in tires.
As a side note: the seller didn't protect the wheels quite well enough and a piece of the rear hub was broken off. I'm hoping I can fix it with some JB Weld. Also one of the front bearings is not tight in its hub and can move. I'm hoping to shim or glue it in place.
