stripped thread on fuel pump repair question

#1

Post by kotkinjs1 »

In the ongoing saga of the 82 gl1100 that's nickel and diming me with issue after issue, I've now got an oil leak under the right head/valve cover. I'm 99% positive I've nailed it down to the thick gasket area between the fuel pump and the head due to a stripped bolt I realized it has. It's the inner bolt. I've asked elsewhere and the best repair seems to be the helicoil route. I've pretty gotten over my anxiety about drilling into the head but I've got one more question before I begin....

I'm not sure of the 'geometry' for lack of a better word of the relationship between the tach cable, the blind hole (I guess it's a blind hole?) into the cylinder head, and what happens when I enlarge that hole to be able to insert the helicoil in relationship to the tach cable. Will I mess anything up? Will the tach cable still be secured by that bolt when it's in there and the helicoil won't be in the way? Is there any other way around this issue (the tach cable being secured into that bolt hole) by using another thread repair method other than an insert?

You want to take the tach drive off before doing the repair. If you stay with the stock bolt size there should not be an issue

Got it done and was a lot easier than use worried about! Super simple actually. Thanks! So far no leak.... Will take it on a longer ride tomorrow (in the daytime lol).

one of the risks of using allen head machine screws is it is really easy to over torque them. I also put a dab of anti seize stuff on them for the next time I remove them especially as they are different kinds of metals
