Center stand cross member replacement.

#1

Post by DUGG »

Late last summer while doing some maintenance on my gold wing the center stand gave out when I tried to get it back on the floor. I had noticed an odd wobble to the motorcycle went on the center stand. I used a floor jack while balancing the motorcycle with one hand and got it back on the ground. I rode the bike maybe twice more and then parked it

After about two hours of removing stuff I had a very naked Goldwing

The crossmember was pretty rotted out on both sides so chose to remove and replace it as opposed to plating over it

After cutting out the crossmember I cut off the rest of the rotted out portions. I found a piece of heavy wall 1 inch tubing fit perfectly inside of the existing crossmember piece.

I left a knob on either side of the frame that the new piece of 1 inch tube would sit in and hold it in place.
At this point of need to figure out the angle of the dangle so to speak so that the center stand works correctly. Will probably also blast the areas with a soda blaster to remove the rust before welding it all into place

I had an early '78 frame rotted out like that last year, but had a '79 frame that couldn't be used due to head stock damage that had very good lower frame pieces. A very good friend (a nuclear welder) cut out the sections from each and spliced the '79 section into the '78. It was interesting to note that the '79 had extra gussets not present on the '78.

It’s interesting that the 79 had extra gusset but these 81 does not. The other thing is how does water get inside of this thing to rusted out. Seems to be a pretty common problem on these old wings

I think I'll have a look under my 78 after seeing this recently. Thanks for the heads up.

There are lots of places on the frame that aren't sealed. There should be drain holes so that the water can escape but they often become blocked. I like to add some creeping rust proofing oil into some of the upper openings so that it can spread over the interior of the frame to protect it (put something underneath to catch the drips for a few days if you do this and don't forget about the hollow pressed steel lugs attached to the frame that have separate openings and drain holes).

Unfortunately this project has to a halt because the motor that feeds the wire on my welder died. The machine is 20+ years old and the part is no longer available. So hopefully the next day or two I’ll be able to pick up a new welder and continue with this.

I’ve looked for drain holes but haven’t found any. Can anyone show me where they are at?

Back in business. About $1100 later for a new welder and splurge on a new helmet I could put a cheater lens in so I can see what I’m welding. Sucks to get old.

I notched the upper part of the old cross member on the left side. This way my new piece could fit snugly between the frame

The only way I could figure to locate the new crossmember correctly was to use the bump stop for the center stand. So I removed the bracket from the exhaust system and bolted to the frame and used a pair of vise grips to hold a stand in place while I tacked it with the welder
