G'day gents... I'm looking at picking up a replacement crankshaft for my 75 project. Mine is badly scored on what appears to be 1 and 3 cylinders. Engineering company has said they can machine it but depending on thickness of bearings avail. The guy I dealt with is motorcycle nut and is well aware of bearing coding... Yahoo.
I've found a number of cranks on evil Bay... From 75 to 79.
What I want to know is... Is there a difference between the years... Ie 76-77-79. Because of the kick start mechanism on 75-76 I was wondering if it was any different.
Every journal has markings but these 2 were the worst.

Off hand the only significant difference I know of is the timing marks changed. Early (75-77) 1000's are marked at the 5 degree baseline and later (78-79) are a 10 degree base. It was part of the 78 retune. Base Timing, advance curve, carbs, valve lift/duration, and exhaust all changed. some info here https://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 58#p155838

The various bearing sizes originally available from Honda were only to obtain a precision factory fit. If the journals are ground undersize, there are no factory shells that would fill the gap, even if all the originals were still available. So yes, you need a crank.

That is what I did with my 77 it came with a spun connecting rod bearing on the 1 cylinder along with a bent valve.
I got the entire crankshaft with pistons from a 1978 and ordered new main bearings the kick start part was easy.

Re: 76-79 crankshaft differences?
Thanks gents. I thought there were differences but wasn't sure exactly what. I wasn't aware of the timing. So definitely on the lookout for a good 75-76 crank... Few on evilbay...
I think I'm going to have to split my spare parts motor. It's high km so no guarantee that the crank will be any good in it but only one way to find out I guess..

75-77 should all be the same but as said above the 78-78 have different timing marks due to different compression ratio & cams. If you find a good 78-79 you can use a degree wheel & remark It to 75-77 specs. This is how I found my F2/t2 timing marks were 6deg off from the factory & remarked them. Not hard to do at all.

Re: 76-79 crankshaft differences?
Well thankfully... Today I bit the bullet and started splitting the second engine I had. It was pretty rough on outside but turned out to be a rough diamond. Bores are all original and crank and bearings on inspection one by one... I couldn't ask for better.
Happy days... So happy I could cry...

Re: 76-79 crankshaft differences?
FWIW, I put the kickstart from a '77 engine on a '79 engine. The part that engages with it attaches to the end of the crankshaft. I can't say if there are any differences other than that, though.
