Bubbles in the fuel supply to carbs

#1

Post by Ace Cattledog »

In my 'so far futile search' for the cause of the exhaust popping in the right side exhaust, I temp'd in a clear vinyl tube from the fuel pump to the carbs. No specific reason for that tubing except it was what I had handy. While testing the engine, on the center stand, I noticed large air bubbles flowing thru the tube to the no. 3. I tightened the hose clamps on the suction side of the pump and the bubbles stopped and so did the popping. I am hopeful that his is the only cause of the popping. Since then I have installed a large (auxillary) clear fuel filter inline to act as a sediment bowl to catch the rust and other particulate from the rehabilitating fuel tank. That filter never 'fills up' with gas and may be introducing air into the steam of fuel. Until I get the tank cleaned up, I won't know.

My clear inline filter on the pump inlet never has filled on the four GL1000s that I've owned.

Regarding the air bubbles, what are the other possibilities for an air leak? The fuel pump itself?

Ace

my 2 cents

Folks have "chased" air in the fuel lines and filter for years as a possible source of Carb issues. I have never heard of it resolving any issues and is generally accepted as a futile enterprise. The space above the fuel level in the bowls is open and any air pumped in there would immediately be evacuated to the atmosphere. If the bowls were a pressurized type there may be cause for concern. In our application I am pretty sure it is a normal state and all the bikes have it.

I think this illustrates the reason of why Mr Honda ran black rubber fuel lines and a black metal filter !🙄😜

I figure if I see bubbles moving through the filter fuel must be moving through it too...

Thank you kindly Whiskerfish. You made sense of the issue with your explanation of the atmospheric vent. I will continue working to solve my right side 'popping' problem.
