TRAC Rebuild Kit?

#1

Post by NotSoLilCrippseys »

My son and I have a project '83 Interstate (and a parts '83 Standard). PO rebuilt fork seals without touching the TRAC system, which isn't looking so hot (though it's not leaking either, which might be considered good enough in nearly 40 year old fork tech).

While we're on the project, I'd like to pull apart the TRAC system and replace gaskets/seals - unless it's ill advised by those experienced in such matters.

We've dipped into a couple GW forums, including NGWClub, which we recently joined. No aftermarket kits, from what we can tell from our searches.

What I find are suggestions that one bring the o-rings/gaskets to a general supplier and get matching parts. I'm open to that approach, but I don't want to take apart the TRAC system on a fork that works ok and end up with a fork I can't put back together for lack of a gasket.

I can't be the first - or the hundredth - person to face this question. Advice?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Looks like JSBail in 2014 was able to order parts from the Honda dealer once armed with parts numbers from CMSNL - or Babbitt's. I'll give that a shot.

The GL anti-dive units are pretty much the same as what was used on the '83 CB1100F. I've disassembled and rebuilt many of these as part of my powder coating/rebuild service. There isn't really all that much in the units that can or will wear out. I've had guys buy all new internal parts for them, but honestly, I think they wasted their money. In any case, disassemble them, clean thoroughly, and replace any rubber parts that are still available from Honda. (There are no aftermarket parts that I know of) Use some assembly grease on the little O-ring, replace the copper washer on the drain bolt, reassemble, and you're done. If you're unsure of what you're doing, leave one assembled to use as a guide.

Beautiful! I'm not too worried about the rebuild, as the diagram seems simple enough. We'll grab what can can in terms of rubber parts, clean and lube, button it up, and ride. Looks like maybe an hour per leg, barring a sheared bolt or screw.
