Zinc oil additive.

#1

Post by Gowing »

Last week changed the oil in 75. I added approx. 3 oz of risilone zinc additive. Took 8 mile quick trip and froze my hands. When I got home I had a tough time finding neutral. That has never happened before. Dumped that oil out. Be careful when adding un necessary stuff.

Yes, you have to be careful with a wet clutch. Synthetic oils often do the same thing. At the risk of another dead kitten, use Castrol 20W50 T4 (for motorcycles) and you'll be fine. In fact, Bob will be your uncle! lolol

Yeah, zinc is great for reducing wear on flat tappet or rocker cams, not so much for clutch plates!

My .02, any additives are a bad idea generally for a wet clutch or a starter clutch, just not a good idea.

As a side note, I have used only synthetic based car oil in my 76 since around 1980, usually Mobil1 15w-50 or Rotella .

I didn't even know I was auditioning new nephews.......

FWIW, I tried Rotella T4 (15W40 only) back when it was just called Rotella T and didn't like the way it worked in either of my bikes, even in the 'Wing in hot weather so I changed to T6 (synthetic 5W40) in the winter machine (expensive but it allowed easy starting after sitting outside at work all day in -30c) and Castrol 4 stroke (now called "4T") in the 'Wing.
Since I retired and the winter machine no longer sits outside for hours every day I changed to the Castrol for it too, although this year I bought Motomaster (Canadian Tire house brand) because they were sold out of the less expensive Castrol.
Note that Castrol makes both "4T" conventional motorcycle oil and "T4" synthetic motorcycle oil for more than double the price. I think they do things like this to confuse people.....

Why 20W50? Honda specified 10W40 and I found that even in hot weather 15W40 made shifting harder.....

I use this fluid in my 1000 for decades. No clutch/shift/starter issues.
This kind of MoS2 addtives were first used in aircraft engines in ww2. Even without oil pressure the engine would still run half an hour.

I used to use oil & fuel additives too but I eventually figured out that modern fuel & oil don't need them.
