breaking: 82 dual front brake calipers on 81 single rotors?

#1

Post by nakedinterstate81 »

Hi all,
When I traded the 81 last year before the resto the guy had already ordered 82 front dual caliper rotors from ebay and threw it in the deal and even installed them for me. We couldn't test them but now that I am riding, changed brake lines and bled the lines I am still getting a spongy feel and not the braking power I expected from dual pistons and stainless lines.

Here is what it looks like, only 1/3 of the brake pads are in contact with the rotor

So I am guessing these are not compatible and I need either new rotors or go back and rebuild the single piston calipers?

Other options?

Somewhere on here is a brake swap list that might help. I have a 78 and used 85 V65 32mm twin piston calipers and 85 VT1100 twin brackets. You might need bigger rotors.

You clearly have something going on there that isn’t right. I thought you were missing the small mounting brackets for the calipers, yet I see they are present. Looks like a rotor/fork lower/caliper incompatibility issue.

Should I even bother getting the duals to work?
It's two small pistons vs one large piston.
Major difference?

The brakes on these bikes are not up to modern standards by any means, yet the dual piston ones do have a larger piston area vs single. If someone doesn’t have a solution to get that caliper on the rotor fully then the single piston with the new brake lines will be better than that setup.

I can't say for sure, but I think the brackets used there are for the single piston calipers. The dual piston calipers' brackets are different. I might be able to come up with a pic...

Kind of hard to see the details, but these brackets are from an '82. The '80-81 brackets are more of a 'C' shape...

Thanks Track,
The single piston caliper brackets were left in place when he installed the dual piston calipers.

Are these available somewhere?

You're going to have to search Ebay or similar sites, I'm afraid. There was a thread not long ago concerning this swap where several year/ model parts options were discussed. You might start there...

Here is a cross reference with the correct part numbers that will take the dual piston calipers and mount to a 1982 GL1100 set up. They are taken from a 1982 GL1100 parts fiche and cross referenced to my Honda reference set up.:-D

Now whether these brackets will mount to your 1981 GL1100 forks is a question and if someone has the brackets to check then a measurement should confirm the spacing etc.

Thanks.
I just checked the box with the retired single piston calipers. The brackets are still attached to the calipers and actually are "C" shaped.
So he must have used the brackets that came with the dual piston calipers and obviously they don't fit.
Perhaps there are different diameter rotors used in the 82? My 81 has 280 mm diameter disks.

Yes the picture on the fiche I looked up for the 82 GL 1100 showed a vented rotor that is different than what you have on your bike. So either the rotor or the fork lower or both are different on the 82 model.

The fork lowers have the same mounting spacing from '80 to '82, so the brackets will fit. The '82 rotors are indeed different, but IIRC, others have used the dual caliper with the early rotor. The '82-83 Aspencade used a wider, vented rotor.
If you'd like, I can dig up the '82 rotors and measure them some time today...
I still think the problem is the bracket, but can't really tell from the pic that's been posted.

That would be awesome.
I will take a photo of the existing bracket.
