Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
I couldn't get the water pump housing off after hitting it with a mallet, but the cap came off and I was able to move the impeller just a tiny bit.
I don't see anything wrong in there.

to be clear, It's the up and down, and side to side movement that should not exist. Slight rotation is normal

I just grabbed a needle nose plier and try to wiggle it by the impellers sideways and up down.
No movement.
What's the trick to get the cover off?

All bolts must be removed from the cover. And the oil filter should be removed. It should come off with a little help

Two bolts, take it off. If the wrong sealant was used, or any for that matter, you may need to tap it with a hammer

Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
The cover has two locating dowels that prevent it from popping off. You'll need to get a very thin chisel and split it from the trans cover at the gasket line. I made a tool out of an old kitchen knife that I use for that kind of stuff because it's thin enough to not really damage the mating surface. I also made a similar tool for scraping gaskets...

Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
I spoke to the previous owner and he said that he used a new oem pump, bought and installed by the previous owner, and fixed his installing mistakes with this kit and new hex bolts. There was oil in the coolant and it was missing some o rings.

If you listen to the video I posted, can you tell by the frequency of chatter if this is related to the rotation of the water pump or something else. Valves maybe?
I will take the whole front cover off. The forks have to come off soon to be replaced by the rebuilt ones and that makes it a lot easier.
I am waiting for a 20% off coupon from Harbor F. to get the motorcycle jack.

Can you crank it over with the starter while watching/ listening near the water pump? I'm also very curious about the rust/ discoloration/ strains in the water pump area...

Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
I am going to try that. I have my chiropractor on speed dial
Oil is still in there, I leave the engine kill switch off and maybe use my hose clamp pliers to squeeze
the starter.
Perhaps the red coloration comes from Napa's Prestone coolant. It's silicate free and orange in color.

Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
I finally had some time to get to the water pump and rebuild the fork seals and upgrade to progressive springs.
I like the easy access when the forks are out plus I can put the whole cooling system back together more easily.
I was hoping to see some scratch marks on the inner housing and the impellers of the pump but I was disappointed.
No scratch mark at all. There are some machine marks (arrow) but not on the impeller blades.
The pump has no play at all, Japanese bearings and some discolored impeller blades (are these black when new?).
I guess the red color is coming off the gasket or sealer being used.
All the seals look good except one around a dowel pin looked a little worn.
I am not sure if I should replace everything now and how to explain the chatter sound.

Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
I've attached the pump drive shaft to my drill and spun it and there was no offensive sound related to a bearing problem.
I am going to put the cover back on without the water pump, fill up oil and listen if the same noise comes up.
I guess that's safe for a few seconds to run...

Re: first 200 miles observations, cold clatter, missing gear
Installed a brand new Honda water pump, Honda seals & o rings today.
Observed the same noise as I posted in the above video
Went around with the stethoscope again and it's definitely the loudest around the water pump housing.
I would compare it to a bicycle chain rubbing on the chain guard, after you've crashed it when you were four years old.
Any ideas Gentlemen?
