Original rear turn signal setup

#1

Post by Sinahogol »

Hi,

I am Simon from the Netherlands and I am working on a GL1000 K1 from 1976. This was before taking it apart:

Now the problem is: I know that rear turn signal setup is not original and although I am not a hardliner when it comes to originality (did some modifications anyway), I would like to have it look original.

I've been looking on the internet a bit and understand that there's two different setups for the rear turn signals:
- connected to a chrome bumber under the seat.
- connected to the rear tail light.

I've been looking on CMSNL and for the chrome bumber it says up to serial number 2040165, mine is 2026250. Does that mean my bike had the setup on the rear tail light? Or are there other setups as well?

Neither a chrome bumber or rear tail light with turn signal connections where on this bike, so I am wondering which one to look for. Hoping it's not the bumber, they're rare and quite expensive I heard.

For anyone who's interested, this is the project at the moment:

Welcome Simon.

The European bikes had a different rear fender design with a longer section on the back vs a North American style. So a member from over there may have a better answer for you. Someone here maybe more familiar with the European models though and be able to answer your question.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Hello Simon,
All models had rear bumper. Models 1975 and 1976 up to serial number 2040165 had the turn signals on the rear bumper and 1976 models from serial number 2040166 mounted the turn signals on the taillight bracket. This is why there are two types of rear bumper, one with the indicator brackets (84101-371-000) and the other without the indicator brackets (84101-371-010)

My bike came with a ratty sissy bar that the rear signals were attached. So, I attached the rear signals to the fender bolt with these brackets:

Kind of similar to what you've got... so probably not helpful.

Thanks andorragl! Already noticed it was hard to find pictures of the GL1000 without the rear bumper, now I know why. Guess I'll be looking for a decent rear bumber for a reasonable price for a while.

In the meantime I think I'll just go for the old setup or something like yours chainman.

Thanks for replying everyone!

Grab Rails (rear bumper) are about as hard to find as pristine seats or left side battery covers. Good luck in your search.

Thank you Fred! I settled on a non original stainless steel grab bar made in the UK. Not original, but close enough for now (until I somehow manage to find a nice original one). Next challenge is to find these turn signal bolts (90155-371-000), also challenging if you don't want to pay 30 bucks a piece.

Here is where you can get the 90155-371-000 bolts:

Take a look at the grabbars I made. One of them uses separate mounts for the turn signals so they don't have to be mounted on the bar.

Thanks cfairweather! That's the Barracuda ones, I've seen them on oldwing.eu as well. Saves me some import charges and they've got the hard-to-find radiator hoses in stock as well.

Those grab bars (and the tool you made for it) are looking awesome! Did you end up making more and selling them?

Thanks and thanks for the tip as well! Seems like a much more reasonable price and then I know it's a decent quality as well.

I used it on my 76. Just took the old hoses and laid them on the new one to figure out where to actually cut it. worked like a charm.
