Engine stands?

#1

Post by Gc33 »

Has anyone modified an engine stand to suit the GL engine?
Think I've got an idea but looking at others ideas as well... Could well be better and more simple than what I'm thinking up....
Something like this picture...

Others have concocted an adapter that will mount a 4-cylinder GL engine into a stand. Just do a search on "gl1000 engine stand adapter". I'm pretty sure there were plans for a similar adapter around as well. Basically, a big pipe bent in a J shape with some attachment points. The pic below is from the GoldwingFacts.com

Along with several "test run" stands complete with radiators and the such.

I still hold on to the, flop it around on the bench, then stuff it in the frame and hope for the best :crosso :crosso :crosso

This is a stand I built after seeing (what I thought was) a Honda GL shop stand. It just mounts up to Harbor Freight engine stand. I included the second photo to show the stabilizing strap(in red). It's a big help when rotating.

Mine has been used on three GL1000s and a CB750F. I strap it to the engine while still in-frame and on wheels (and center stand). Then strip the frame off of the engine. Yes, I have to roll the engine around (cardboard and old carpet scraps on the floor) to vlean and paint the bottom. Cheap ratchet straps keep it fixed the rest of the time, and the frame remounted and built out while the dolly still attached. It has saved space in my small crowded garage.

I use a similar dolly to Pid's for removing the engine (there's a sketch of the blocking needed in the front of my maintenance log book), then use a cable puller on a ceiling mounted track to lift it onto the bench and if I need to get at the bottom I lift it again with the hoist. There are pics of the motor going from the bench to the bike here

A few years ago someone got their hands on a OEM stand and I think they were going to produce a few but I can not seem to find anything about it now.

I believe this is the OEM Design

This is pretty much what I have been doing up til now. But I want to get it so I can rotate it and the some cleaning and painting of the engine as well. As an added bonus be able to work on the engine construction as well...

I screwed some 2x6 to a run of the mill atv/motorcycle lift, then unbolted the frame and lifted it away, leaving the engine ratchet strapped down.

doesnt get you the rotation advantage of a stand obviously, but works well.
