compression

#1

Post by Yellowjacket »

I have been having a great time on my gl1000 this summer. Riding to work this morning it totally lost compression and quit running. The bike does not smoke while running and has ran great all summer. Where do I start? It is a 1975 gl1000. Thanks in advance.

Curious about this one. That can't be what he means, at least literally. I'm still a newbie, but methinks a sudden loss of ALL compression at once would be.. Rather violent.

Iwould think "roll to a stop"...... But pretty hard to believe. Unless the crank broke, and the pistons stopped going up and down That WOULD be violent

I was thinking blowing both head gaskets at once, but yeah that would take the cake for sure. Hard to believe in either case, agreed.

Good thought. But both belts would have to go at the same time. And it would be real luck if a valve didn't wind up in a piston. But maybe.....

Just sounds to me like it died on the road, no matter what terminology he used.

Curt,
Pull off a plug wire, have you got spark? Pull off the fuel line, have you got fuel? In my opinion (from 2000 miles away) is that your fuel pump failed.

A broken belt going behind another belt and knocking it off too isn't unheard of. I hope not but it's a real possibility. I also would think it would make a noise though.

I had a plug go out on me once, suddenly it turned into a 700lb C90.

Maybe they are silent timing belts. ;)
