OMG this battery ground

#1

Post by nakedinterstate81 »

I just unraveled a big chunk of electrical tape off the battery ground and found how the PO made an extension.
This made me question if it is connected to the right point anyway.
I could not find anything in the manual.
That bolt it connects to is the long one that goes across the engine and does not want to come out easily.
Any other good ground points?

Cheers.

That is the proper location for the ground cable. It insures a ground from both the engine and frame.

I have tried removing that bolt because the petcock will not clear the bracket for fuel tank removal. I was able to move it a little by jacking the engine a tiny bit but I was afraid of damaging the threads on the other side.
Looks like I have to make a mechanical extension. My little solder iron won't be able heat that wire.
What do you suggest?

I generally unbolt the brackets from the frame and then turn that long bolt out as if it were threaded in. It seems to loosen up as you go.
As far as repairing or replacing the cable, it's kind of an odd duck as the battery end terminal is quite a bit smaller than any pre-made cables I've looked at. I wonder if an electric motor repair shop could make up a cable... To repair the existing cable, I have seen screw type splice kits to repair/ lengthen welding cables, but that may be kind of bulky and difficult to insulate.
Just looking, partzilla.com does list the cable as being available, although it's a bit pricey at $23 plus shipping. Another source you might consider is an auto stereo shop. They use heavy cable for amps and such...

Or a battery specialty store that only sells batteries for vehicles. The one I have here in town has a very large selection of ground cables to choose from.

Wire nut! Kidding....23 bucks isn't that bad is it? Good thick ends from an auto store is like 6 bucks...not sure if you can get wire by the foot in large gauge. What's the proper size 8 ga?

Chop up some booster cable (just a little bit off) and put ends on it from the big box store.

Master Battery made me one from 600 volt welding cable. It was free because I had to wait 15 minutes. Thanks for all your suggestions.

JP Cycles have flexible cables in various lengths that are excellent. Worked great in all in my bike applications.
