Quick tire/wheel GL1000 question (Comstars)

#1

Post by pidjones »

I have a leaky valve stem on a front Comstar. I have a couple Patchboy metal stems like we use on the GL1800s. The question is: can I deflate the front tire, clamp it to one side, and have enough room to swap stems without pulling one bead outside the rim? I don't do my own tire work, but would do this if it is doable. Otherwise, I'll take it to the shop that mounted my tire last time.

I did exactly that on my Valkyrie when the front valve stem started leaking.

Thanks, guys! I have a couple wood parallel -jaw clamps that ought to be perfect for this.

I do not know if they will be strong enough to break the bead. Before i got the big vice I used my truck like in these pics viewtopic.php?p=234614#p234614

I've done that a couple of times. Large C-clamps and some small pieces of wood to keep from damaging the tire. Have to work it a bit to break the bead but it will work. Once I had to use a tire iron to persuade it a bit. Once the bead breaks the rest is much easier.

Thanks, everyone! Got'er done! One parallel jaw woodworker's clamp and one C-clamp got the bead broken and pushed over past the valve. Cut it off with my knife, mounted and tightened up the Patchboy stem. Hardest was getting the bead back over the new stem. The pounded it lightly all around to center to the rim, hit it with air and it reseated. Installed a valve in the stem, pressed it up and sprayed with mild soap solution (actually contains a lot of hydrogen peroxide as I also use it for bug removal). All good-to-go. Oh, and I never even took the wheel off of the bike!

Throttle cable for the '79 should be in later today, so I'll get that back on the road, too.
