I'm in the process of going thru another 76 gl1000 and it's now "clutch time".
New Barnett plates and stronger springs are on order.
My question is.......
what about this B plate Mod?
Who here has bothered to do it?
is it worth it?
Is the B plate really a weak point? (in my experience.... No it's not, I've never had a problem).
The plan is to use this engine "Hard" and a non slipping clutch is essential.
Every GoldWing clutch I have ever done has been back to stock, ( I put the B plate in, stock springs,etc.).
What's your experience with this "fix"?
another clutch question

Re: another clutch question
I have ridden numerous 1000's hard and never had a B Plate failure. I never did tire smoking or wheelies etc.. but I have run stop light to stop light against many bikes without issue. The only wing I ever had that slipped was high mileage and was fixed by passing the plates over some 600 grit and removing the glaze that had built up.

Re: another clutch question
I too went down the road of the B-plate mode assuming that most of what I read here was Gospel...turns out it's not. But a novice has to start somewhere. So I took the forums temperature on the issue and decided to get a new B-plate and put it back in.
I had real problems servicing my clutch the first couple of times I tried. Even bent one of the steels into a cone shaped annulus. I was ignorant of the whole wet clutch theory of operation. Besides bending one of the steels I cracked some of the parts in my heavy handed way of assembly. In this rare case I found that I had severely under- thought what I was doing. So I studied and analysed how the system works, ultra revued Octanes clutch installation procedures and figured out how I went wrong. It took me three times to get it right. Now with B-plate back in I find my clutch behaves just fine...for me. Again I'm a novice and am ignorant of many of the details and have as yet had any sage of NGW look at or test ride my bike. Thus I am not finished. Perhaps when I meet up with all my forum friends for the first time this summer at the AMA Vintage days meet up, I can get several evaluations and learn from the Master's of all things NGW. I look forward to it. I'm nonplussed about any useful criticisms of my build. In fact I'm counting on it with baited breath.
Wish I hadn't thrown out that bent clutch steel. I should have had it gold plated and mounted on a plaque to commemorate my stupidity and remind myself that you can read information but you cannot fully develope good physical mechanical skills sitting in a recliner reading about it. So, even still I have a lot of "the force" in me...I've much to learn yet.

Re: another clutch question
Always used the B plate with no issues myself. My only question would be on the Barnett extra strong springs may require Popeyes forearm/wrist to pull correctly. Many have found that the normal Honda springs are sometimes hard to pull in easily.
Honda OEM clutch springs are still available and all I have ever used on a clutch rebuild with no slippage issues. Problem is you won’t know until you have the engine back together in the bike to find out what pull strength is required on the lever.

As I have said before, I don't agree with the whole B plate theory. Never tried it, but it makes no sense to me. I think the Honda engineers had it right

Re: another clutch question
I had a damper plate come apart on me about 16 or 17 years ago. When it happened the little leaf springs moved around making it feel like my clutch cable was alternately several turns too loose and several turns too tight. I first noticed this about 5Km from home and by the time I got home the friction material on the plates on either side of the damper was almost completely missing.
You can do what you want but when I prepared the new engine a couple of years ago I replaced its damper plate.
