fix plastic tool tray on a 78
my plastic tool tray in the faux tank shelter has a large crack in the bottom. Has anyone repaired theirs and what did you use. Wondering if it is ABS or PVC or another type of plastic?

Re: fix plastic tool tray on a 78
Common problem caused by not having the air cleaner box down all the way and shoving the box down to get the door closed. I used ABS cement on mine. Seems to be holding OK. It can be reinforced with fiberglass if you wish, but should do it on the inside as there is no space to spare below it. An alternative is self-stick felt or shelf liner to just keep things from falling through.

Re: fix plastic tool tray on a 78
Thanks for the info pidjones. Didn't want to start smearing abs cement on the tray if they were another material. Will give it a shot or maybe cut an insert to go over the cracked area and glue that in as well.

Re: fix plastic tool tray on a 78
Pretty sure it's ABS plastic, but definitely test a bit to be sure.
If it is, a way to keep the tray looking (visually) clean is to buy a thin sheet of black ABS and cut to to the shape of the entire floor of the tray. Glue up the old tray floor, pop in the insert, and you're good as new. The tray may be a few mm shallower, but not enough to notice, and depending how close you can fit to the edges, may be completely invisible.
Food for thought, anyway.

Get a piece of the tape they use on NASCAR cars. Or Flex Tape.Jonesz wrote:my plastic tool tray in the faux tank shelter has a large crack in the bottom. Has anyone repaired theirs and what did you use. Wondering if it is ABS or PVC or another type of plastic?

Re: fix plastic tool tray on a 78
Thanks all. Have ordered a small sheet of 1/16th inch black ABS and cut out a pattern to fit the storage box floor. Am going to cut out a piece of the ABS and glue it in with ABS cement once it arrives. Will fill the crack with ABS cement and put a strip of black Gorilla tape on the underside. Will let you know how it works. I am thinking that cracked storage trays are fairly common.
