Good question. Was it a quiet exit, or did it make a lot of noise. Or did someone forget to install it when they had the cover off? Guess it didn't run to good

It fired when I got it, then noisy cranks and then no catch and had symptoms of a bad starter clutch so pulled to service and inspect and guess we found the issue but where would it go?

It's in there somewhere. Try magnet fishing?

I’m hoping it’s behind the stator and wrapped around the starter clutch mechanism, but I didn’t think there was room there for it. I never thought it possible, but if broken, it looks like it could get pulled past the kick-start mechanism and into the output shaft and then the gears. And then- - not good. Robins suggestion might tell the most without a full tear down. A magnet could find debris via the oil return galley under the cams.
