Bad Airshocks?

#1

Post by nakedinterstate81 »

Howdy, all

Aired up my shocks tonight and when I released the air, orange liquid came out the valve.
I guess that is not supposed to happen...

Can I rebuild these or are there better options?

They are rebuildable. I think there is a write up in shop talk covering the process.

Found it, thanks.
I also found some posts of people not wanting to deal with air again and use progressive shocks.
What's the pro and cons?

These?

I tried three different pairs of shocks but not progressives and went back to the air ride. This will be a personal choice. I rebuilt my shocks and updated all the air line connections to minimize leakage. They still have a very slow leak but will hold long enough for me to take a road trip.

really straight forward to rebuild. I think there is an 1100 write up, I did a 1200 write up, the principles are the same

The biggest advantage to air shocks, especially if you're riding a fully dressed bike is quick adjustability. It's more complicated to get a wrench on the shock with saddle bags in the way...
I've done several sets of Honda air shocks. They are pretty easy to do...
"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

"He that is good with a hammer tends to think everything is a nail" - Abraham Maslow

"If you can't take the time to do it right the first time, how are you ever going to find the time to do it over?" -Unknown

Current Rides:
'Grumpy' - '81 Standard, now fully dressed.
'Layla' - '81 Standard w/dealer installed fairing and Hondaline bags.
'Scarlett' '76 'Survivor' nekkid as a j-bird!

Under Construction:
The 'Jalopy' '78-'79 Mash-up
'Quikie' '81 gl1100I back on the lift, project with the step-son!

In The Shed:
'81 gl1100I barn find aka "Josie, the farmer's daughter." (almost comatose build)
'77 gl1000, roller parts bike.
'82 gl1100I, 'Old Crusty' titled roller parts bike (free!)
'82 gl1100I, My first 'Wing, and an expensive lesson!

Thank you all.
Rcmatt your images are not showing in the rebuild post.

Would the ebay shock I posted work?
It's not exactly the recommendation from progressive, but it came off a heavy bike.

Here's a great you tube on how to do it.

But if all you've done is lost a little of the ATF out of them, like mine did in transit when I bought them from eBay, you can just turn them upside down, empty them out and fill them back up again.

At least, that's all I plan on doing!?

I replaced the air shocks on my 1100 standard with a pair of coil over progressive shocks..best thing I've done to it.
My shocks bottomed out on me twice which sent me sliding down the road.
Never again will I have air shocks on any motorcycle I own.
hated them on cars..hate them on bikes.

Wow. Sorry to hear that.
I have had them on the rear axle in my 1966 Econoline Van and was constantly fixing air leaks.
