Was it there before? Is it from the valve cover area? From the ignition cover area? From the exhaust maybe?

Ty for the quick reply. It went away after a few minutes of running. I was able to track it down to the part that replaces the cam thing. That the technical term for it. Lol. Now it has no tick and starts with just the push of a button no throttle. I have done a single carb conversion also thanks to this place. I have taken a none running bike to a summer of fun and learning. My next thing is to hydro dip blue flames.

The rotor. Is it loose? Was it rubbing on something?

My 83 1100 was making what I thought was a ticking sound (and running kind of lousy too) and it turned out to be a bad spark plug resistor cap that had a hairline crack in it and arcing to the head.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you know that you need new clutch plates?

Well cant get in to neutral while ridding and 3 gear clutch starts slipping. If you think it's anything else I am willing to try it.

Are you using an automotive oil with friction modifiers? These will slip unless you use an oil with no friction modifiers. Most use Rotella 15/40.

Also, have you adjusted the clutch cable at both ends? It doesn’t take much for that to cause your issues as well.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I use what the book recommends and as for the clutch cable I have only adjusted the handle bars side
I am waiting for my day off to adjust both ends.

Before getting too deep into adjusting the bike's clutch system, read this very informative Clutch topic from Mike Nixon. First. tumb2

The Nixon article is good and exactly what I do with my bikes. A lot less work than replacing the plates, and you'd have to do it anyway if you did replace the plates.

When the books for these bikes were written (& indeed until about 10 years ago) it was quite reasonable to use automotive oil in motorcycles with wet clutches. You will note that the manual says something very close to
"Use only high detergent, premium quality motor oil certified to meet or exceed U.S. automobile manufacturer's requirements for Service Classification SE. Motor oils intended for service SE will show this designation on the container. The use of special oil additives is unnecessary and will only increase operating expenses."

But SE oil has not been available for a long time. SJ oil worked reasonably well in most wet clutch bikes but now you will have a hard time finding anything with a lower rating than SN and SN will make your clutch slip.

The current best knowledge is that to ensure that your oil does not cause the clutch to slip you need to use an oil that has a JASO-MA rating.
