What is going on with the starter clutch?

Problems with it, like intermittent free spinning and a huge clatter when it stops, often only means you're using the wrong type of oil.

Well actually yeah, mine quit as soon as I started using the Delo 400 and that was a suggestion from someone else who'd had the same experience.

Some tips on the starter clutch service: http://wingovations.com/slipping-starte ... 4579471093
Pull the crankcase filter (4 bolt oblong shaped plate, bottom right side of engine.) With it off, flush through with some fuel.
Since you are already going into the rear case, pull the clutch plates and inspect them for wear and warp. Change the starter chain; they can and do break and make a mess. Depending how deep you want to go, this might be a good idea too:

Good time to take the starter off and give a service too. Check the stator for any signs of frayed or cracked wiring and signs of burning. Take the water pump outlet off and check the impellor for any signs of sideways movement. Any movement at all, change the pump.

Thanks for this info. Top of task list as the clutch keeps spinning on cold starts.

Merry Christmas all.

If the starter comes out, be sure to disassembly and clean the carbon out. The carbon, when hot, steals voltage and results in slow cranking only when hot. So get it clean when it is out because that is easy to do.

Mostly when it's cold? Outside temps cold, not the engine.

Most of the bikes I've owned have had similar issues with the starter clutch failing to catch on REALLY cold days (Michigan winters, mostly). I'm assuming it's an oil thing, because it goes away once the bike is warmed up a bit. Starting with a fresh oil change might help/eliminate that problem. (I can't make any recommendations, because that's outside the scope of my expertise AND probably outside of the scope of this thread.)

I agree. only seems to happen in colder weather. and with winter layups. I start mine up every week during the winter, and usually warm the shop up before I do it. Every now and then it sticks. But usually catches on the second try. Hitting the starter button just as the clutch starts to stop spinning, seems to help it catch
