OEM Honda clutch cables

#1

Post by flyday58 »

Hello all. I bought a new OEM cable for the 76 Standard and if I route it like Honda did from the factory (based on pics I've been able to find) it's really tight at left lock. I ended up running it outside of the speedo bracket to get a little more but I don't like the sharp bend it has at the perch end.

Partzilla says the correct # fits 75 and 76 only, but looking at 1977 they say that one fits the LTD along with 77-79. Anyone know if there's a difference in length? I can't route this one correctly because of the tightness and the fact that it's putting pressure on the igntion switch plug. Thanks for any help.

Yes the handlebars did change some. I know they jumped up in 78 but I "think" there is some difference in the 75-77. I do know the Mirrors changed height and i think that was a result of the handlebar changes. I have a video of cable routing and the different lengths on here somewhere

Got them off ebay in January, billed as 75-77 bars. The listing is old enough that no other details are available other than the title, "Honda GL1000 Goldwing 1000 75-77, handlebars, control switches". The switches are a very dark gray, nearly black but not quite. I have the riser portion pretty much parallel with the forks.

Thanks Whisk, that video is one of the things I've been looking for as it's definitive. With the oem cable routed that way, it's too tight at full left lock. It wouldn't be the first time I tried to go oem with Partzilla and got something else. I bought a clutch lever from them and it's an inch shorter than what it should be ( I was able to get an 8" lever from one of our members). This cable is Honda-smooth, it's too bad it's short..

"I can't route this one correctly because of the tightness and the fact that it's putting pressure on the igntion switch plug. Thanks for any help."

The clutch cable goes around the steering head, routed underneath both throttle cables. The wires harnesses stand outboard of those 3 cables' routing path, too.
If you drop the headlight down, that will afford a much better view and perspective of where the clutch cable needs to go. tumb2

Thanks, the headlight has been off for awhile so I have the access. Throttle cables and wire harnesses as you say. I've tried routing the ignition switch bundle in front of and behind the clutch cable; the cable is either trying to pull the switch plug out or break it off, depending on which way I route it. I've had to replace the switch because the connector was old and brittle from years sitting in the desert sun, and the clutch cable broke the plastic. I'll post some pics in the morning.

So in the vid I'm guessing the clutch cable with the off-white adjuster cover at the clutch end is oem Honda?
