C5 ignition

#1

Post by millerdog »

Just wond ring if any one who has installed one of thes has had high rpm breaking up. Like 6 grand and up, and if so whether you found any solution to it. I’ve been playing around with different plug gaps, and have made some positive progress but I still can’t get to put to redline.?

Mine does around 8500. It should have been shifted to the next gear anyways. Tried different carburetor and it still does it. Gary from PowerSrc thinks it is lean.
Others have found they need a direct source to battery power. Ignition triggers a relay which connects to a 12 volt source to battery.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

If the C5 fellow suspects a lean condition is limiting the engine RPMS, I'd try pulling the choke button out a small distance to enrichen the carburetors .

What plug gap did you end up with. The directions say to go with the smallest gap possible. I’m at .015 right now.

I consider the install, and setup, even easier then the Dyna, and even the original points system. Have never had a problem , or had to adjust mine, since the day I installed it.

I went down to 0.22 but I’m back to 0.28 I think. Mine is great until about 8500 which is well past the redline on the 1200.

Have you tried the four different settings?

Have you checked to see that it is still timed correctly. If it’s firing too early, it could end up badly.

Nothing easier than C5 to check as far as timing goes.

I’ll check the timing again. Not really Ute what’s going on.

If I run my plug gap at .028, it barely reaches 6 grand.

Could be a carb problem. Backfires out the left side pretty bad on deceleration, and a little most other times. Except acceleration.

WellIve tried everything. I gues I’m gonna start from scratch and solder all my connections. Even if I don’t think that’s the problem. I’ve used high quality weatherproof connections on the entire thing. I can’t find any power leaks, and all the grounds are clean and tight. Back to the drawing board I guess. Might just end up putting a Dyna back on it. At least I could ride.
