I normally shift around 4K. But there are a lot of variables when considering that question. I tend to listen to the engine rather then watching the tach . If you ride as many years as I have, you just know when to shift

I normally shift when it feels like it needs to be shifted. When I am accelerating I don't have time to watch the tach.

According to a noted poster here, you wind it out until it quits pulling, then shift, no need for a tach. He must have gone fishing lately.

Cyborgs numbers are close to what Randakk and others have said. Quite a few say keep it 3k or more for stock 1000 bikes.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Shift points depend entirely on how you are riding. No way to point a certain number down. And don't rev it till it stops pulling. If you want to "wind it out" shift the bike where it ends up at the rpm where it pulls the most in the next gear.

IIRC, my GL1000 would reach 80 Km/h (the speed limit on most of the outside town roads around here) in 1st before it reached redline and was still pulling pretty hard by then so if I waited until it stopped pulling to shift I would have been driving in 1st & 2nd all the time... :orange :8)

I find my 1100 shifts a lot better if I take it up over 3K.

Yeah, I usually run up to at least 4K before shifts. Snicks in much smoother. Even better at 7 or 8 . . .

Amen to what Robin said. Experience at the drag strip...but for normal riding around 4000 is good for me.

Interestingly, the only bike I've ever been on that told me when to shift was the Dnepr, which didn't come with a tach.

as you say, "...motoring in the normal fashion...", I feel anywhere above 3500 and below 4000rpm.
YMMV.
