Got the '78 out on the road today. It was a winter project. Did all the "musts", timing belts, carb rebuild, water pump, new Dyna S and coils, cleaned the gas tank etc. Took her out for a 10 minute cruise. Ran great, but when I turned it off, I shut off the petcock and about a minute later I could hear a "bubbling" sound. I thought it might be the coolant recovery tank, but it seemed to be coming from the fuel pump. When I open the petcock the sound stops, but when I close it, the sound starts up again in apprx 30 seconds. I disconnected the hose from the pump to the carbs and there was a lot of pressure there even without the engine running. Is that normal?
Any ideas?

Not normal. The vent in the gas cap is plugged. Clean or replace the gas cap. If it does it again, loosen the fuel cap and see if the pressure is relieved

Remember, the vent is one way. It allows air in to the tank but not out. So the tank can build pressure while sitting. Especially with a warm engine under it.

So true. Even when out in the hot sun. Wasn't thinking. Would create a vacuum if plugged.robin1731 wrote:Remember, the vent is one way. It allows air in to the tank but not out. So the tank can build pressure while sitting. Especially with a warm engine under it.

Yeah .... sometimes you hear a'whoosh' when you undo the cap and it's easy to think the air is rushing in ....

Hmmm... usually when I had a whoosh, it's the wind blowing in one ear and out the other...
