storing parts

Post by gdonlo04 »

what is the best way to store parts to prevent rust. i wrap them in plastic wrap or zip lock bags but rust still build up. i know that when i purchase a new gear or engine part it looks like an oily residue is on it. is that mineral oil?

I cover them in a thin coat of oil, then wrap them in thin tight fitting plastic sheet, and then in a plastic bag. Air and condensation cause the rust on bare metal. This helps keep air and moisture off of them

I use the tried the true method .............

wipe part off, label made but not put on part...get a storage bag, but it won't fit so you put it down only to try to find it later...

put label on wrong part, throw correct part over shoulder in general direction of parts shelf...only ever to find the part you did not want so keep looking till you find something to take you in a different direction....

I have had one of these Goldenrod de-humidifiers for about 20 years in my gun cabinet.(I think I paid about $20 for it years ago.) I put another one in a cabinet in my shop where I store raw metal parts. No rust on anything after 2 years in that cabinet. Uses very little electricity, you can grab it with a bare hand and it's only warm, won't burn you or start a fire.

I use Remington gun oil on my steel parts. It seems to last longer than other light oils. then I try to bag them in plastic and put the in a place where I can FIND them.

You know that all those little "Do NOT EAT" packets that come in packaging with electronics are nothing more than silaca gel which is readily available and cheap. Wrap your metal part with plastic and put some silca gel in with it. The gel absorbs the moisture and prevents rust. An old sock with silaca gel in it dropped into an empty fuel tank will keep the rust away.

I've got bike parts in the attic, in the garage, in a storage room, and on the back porch. One of these days, I need to organize, toss, sell, and/or use them.

Move to Arizona! Seriously, things will rust <slowly> if left outside, but in the garage, it is simply not a concern. For instance, I put together my '78 GL1000 5'ish years ago. I chose to hang Sportster mufflers and fashioned a couple of hanger brackets from 1/8" steel bar stock. I had intended to paint them, but never did. They're still on there and show no signs of rust. Having spent many decades on the east coast, I still marvel at that. Maybe one day I'll paint them.

Ya, don't try that here in New England.

Where you store them is just as important as how.

I keep all mine in my heated cellar.
