I had so much Marvel Mystery Oil & engine oil squirted down my cylinders on the last recovery that I'm pretty sure no mosquito survived within a quarter mile of my garage. On top of that, I had a fair amount of Sea Foam in the gas.

It took over half an hour before the bike kicked the smoking habit.

It's a great feeling when they fire up after a long hibernation, even if there is a lot of work remaining. action1

I have a question about my bike, now that it's running. I haven't been able to ride it yet because of the weather. But I have been starting it a couple times a day and allow it to warm up to operating temperature. (I figure a little run time is probably good for the bike after the long dormancy, and it's therapeutic to me to listen to it run. :) )

After it warms up it idles nicely. However, I've noticed that there's a little bit of backfiring and popping as I give it some throttle. It's intermittent, and I suspect that the valves are sticking a little. My question is, will the valves loosen up after it runs a while? Is there something I could do short of removing the heads and disassembling the valves to help loosen them up?

After a good run and a carb synch you might be surprised. My 1000s would let me know if it was synch time by popping & back firing a wee bit and they had been running for months.

Doubt it is valves. The GL1000s are cold shouldered, and must be warm to be well behaved. A little SeaFoam or Techron can often help some - and keeping the points in shape (condensers tend to be neglected, too). Also carb balancing can smooth things a lot.

BTW, I was born in Mercy Hospital (not there anymore) in Mt. Vernon, OH.

Agree with above but will add that forgetting to tighten down the rubber intake boots will exhibit as you described as well as a pinched or cut oring in under the intake elbows.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
