I ride all year round. Put knobbies on during winter. I love riding in cold weather. I don't do much distance though. Touring is a warm (er) sport.

So, how did the maiden voyage go with the new engine? Love to hear your impressions on it!

It went extremely well.

The few things i can say for certain at this point it's that throttle response is better. The power curve seems to hit at a lower rpm, so takeoff is dramatically improved. Not sure how much a difference the smaller frame and diminished weight plays in, but the difference in power is dramatic.

First gear runs out quickly. On the 1000, first could run high into the rpm, with no need to shift. Current setup is so quick of the line that i find myself shifting considerably sooner. Off the line in second gives a bit more time, and the power in the lower band makes up for the lack of response that you would feel on the1000.

Overall, drastic improvement. Even returns to idol more efficiently. I haven't taken it on any distance, or top end, but around town it's dramatically improved.

Still have 76 carbs on it, and if so have you found a spot where they fall on their face? Mine was when I downshifted and was at high rpm when I did.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I haven't had any issues with flat spots, however i haven't had much of an opportunity to really push the engine.

Question. I don't *really* mind not having a tach. However,I'm always looking for things to tinker with. What gauges would work, and what are you running? If i remove the current tach, what would i do with the temp gauge?

My temp gauge is aftermarket automotive, and mechanical . Tac is electronic Goldwing. but aftermarket automotive would work as well

My tach is from a Magna tapped into a pulse from one of the coils.

I run DPR8EA-9 designed for 82 and up. Slightly deeper electrode placement. One selling point for the 1200 was a different combustion chamber shape than previous years.

Now that is warming up, I found the flat spot runnIng with the 76 carbs.

I think at some point I will switch to 86 carbs, but all in all, dramatic improvement. Very happy!

Picked up a set of 1200 carbs.

Question: can I use the air box from the 1200, or will I have clearance issues?

If not, what did you use Eric and cyborg?
