Running hotter after a bath?

#1

Post by mmrabit »

All,
I washed off my engine today & now it is running quite a bit hotter than before, not overheating hot but seems like it could get there pretty quick.
I’m going to change the thermostat, maybe just coincidence on the outside chance it decided to quit working right.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks
Mike

I changed the thermostat, no change. The bike barely got into the normal temp zone until I washed it. Seems to run fine, maybe a temp sending unit is bad from getting wet?

Well I checked my plugs, all are white which indicates a lean condition & also the running hot problem.
Just have to figure out why...
Thanks

Weird. Nothing comes to mind that could be set off by a bath.

For some reason it’s not getting enough fuel, tested the fuel pump it’s good, fuel flows freely thru the filter, but when I stop to check it the fuel filter is nearly empty. Very strange..
Thanks

Over the years people have chased air in the fuel system to death and back. It is usually a dead end.

If the filter is empty or nearly so while running then you have either an obstruction inside the tank or shut off valve or the tank vent is blocked or collapsed.

I have a new petcock coming from Western Honda, thinking (hoping) that is my problem.
Thanks

The problem remains a mystery, the new petcock seemed to help though. Doesn’t want to run quite as warm so it must be getting more gas, but the gas filter is still almost empty when I stop to look.My plan is to verify again
the little pipes inside the tank are clear, I think it has to be a simple fix.
Thanks

Mine was doing something similar with the empty fuel filter. I disconnected my fuel lines and attached a loose piece of fuel hose to the petcock. When I turned the petcock to 'ON' nothing came out of the hose. Took off my gas tank cap, blew some compressed air into the hose, and suddenly fuel started pouring out. I'm thinking that as I run the bike, bits of rust and crap floating in the tank get sucked up against the inlet screen inside the tank and cut off my fuel flow. I had just tried to clean my tank with vinegar and then electrolysis but thinking i'll have to remove it from the bike and get it professionally done.

Another thing to try might be making sure that your fuel hoses are crack-free and the hose clamps are new and really tight in case air is getting in somewhere. Also, I've noted that some filters have more resistance than others. The old one I took off the bike was cleanable, and I noted after cleaning that blowing air through it is waaay easier then blowing air through the cheap generic ones I've been using. Maybe try a different type with less resistance? The fuel pumps on these bikes don't put out much pressure even when new.

My gas lines are pretty new, but I will check those clamps, have OEM clamps on the lines, just may be my problem!
Gas tank looks new on the inside, and I ran a piece of clutch cable thru the tubes inside the tank & blew low pressure compressed air in them.
Never thought about the clamps possibly being an issue.
Thanks

does your tank make a hissing sound when you remove the gas cap?
