Problem with 5th gear

#1

Post by bandiso »

Hello from Spain,
After rebuiding the engine in my ‘76 GL1000 all seems to works quite well, but I cannot put the 5th gear. After 4th, I just have a “neutral”. The engine revs but 5th can not be engaged.
The gear shift is OK and doesn’t hit anyware.
Any suggestion where to start looking?
Thanks in advanced

I am not an expert on transmissions, but sounds like the setting must be off for it to move into that gear and so you are getting the "false neutral" in-between 4 and 5

I can not think of any history of this issue. You are going to have to start outside then work your way inside. Check the gear shift again and make certain you are getting a good throw. Maybe sit on the bike and have someone else lay down beside it and watch while you rock the bike back and forth and move it up through the gears. Make sure you are wearing the boots you ride with to see if there is an issue there.

After that remove the front cover and examine the linkage there.

Then you are going to have to go back inside I am afraid.

Does it feel like the shift lever is moving it's full distance? A bent shift fork could cause a gear to not move completely. That put's it between gears, false neutral. I'd have to look at a transmission to know which shift fork works fifth gear. If that is the problem though it means taking the cases apart again to fix it.

Bent forks can be hard to spot if you aren't checking for it. And it doesn't take much to cause problems.

And if you do have to split the cases again get later 1000 shift forks. I think it was mid year 77 and newer were beefed up and stronger.

The front cover gasket can be a problem and interfere with shifting if you used a aftermarket gasket or tightened it down too much. the clearance between the shift drum mechanism and the front cover is millimeters.

Hi Wisker,
Yes, I used an aftermarket gasket but it’s paper and very thick.
I can move all gears softly but the 5th. seems that has “gone”. After 4th. just a “false neutral” and nothing more.
This weekend I will open the fron cover and see If there is something wrong with the linkage.
Hope I did not have to open the engine again!!!

Hi again,
A good look into the front engine cover: all seems to be ok. All linkages, springs... at its place.
Another question: I changed the neutral switch when rebuilding the engine and didn’t pay attention to position it into the shift drum. (If there is a correct position...)
Mat this cause the problem?
How to check?
Thanks

The was just a post last week I think RCmatt007 about a neutral switch causing shift problems. I would certainly pull it out and see if that has any effect.

yes, darndest thing... changed out the switch when it was in gear and then I couldn't shift at all. When I loosened it up, it went right into neutral.

Yeh, not really very similar to the issue bandiso is having. Worth a shot as it is easy and free to check. But I have my doubts. ;)

Problem solved!!
I assume that at rebuilding, I turned upside down 5th gear sproket ....that way would not work at all!!!
Now shifts great and soft.
I had to open the engine again, but now it’s easy for me. Lot of experience!!
Thanks for your replies an this topic.
Next will be a short film riding again my old wing after two years...
