20 year sleeper update. progress, now brake lines!

#1

Post by Don R »

I've been riding it for over 2 years so far. It has an occasional part throttle miss. I did all the usual things when I got it, belts, thermostat, radiator cap, hoses, idler bearings, brakes, tires, then chasing the miss I did 1500 coils, dyna ign, made new wires, new plugs and caps, fuel pump, hoses filters multiple times, carb clean by me 3 times, one by a pro, tonight it was as bad as I've seen it around town, fine on the highway. Back into town the miss comes back. I top off the tank and it's fine. AHA! I think the formerly plugged (I did the speedo cable trick) fuel feed line has a hole inside the tank and below a certain level it sucks air. On the highway the rpm's are high enough to feed it sufficient fuel.
Then again I could be wrong but the tank was pretty rusty and I only flushed/filtered it. Time for a better tank, is there clean one left out there?

I'm thinking it's not practical to repair the feed tube in the tank, I'm looking for a clean gas tank.

You should be able to verify that by switching to reserve (which draws fuel from a different tube) the next time it happens.

That's what I was thinking. If there was a hole in the primary tube sucking in air, then surely the fuel level is too low anyway and air would be drawn in at the end of the tube. As Sidecar Bob says, try it on the reserve feed.

Have you rebuilt the fuel petcock valve internals?
If not, take it apart and look to see if the the disc is still intact.

Update, it also ran poorly on reserve, my brother and I both put new petcocks on our gl1000's about the same time. His is sucking air around the square o ring seals, it was low on fuel and has been parked but when I drained the old gas I could hear it sucking air. I've been busy but am going to check mine also.
I believe these seals are the same as the carb to airbox seals and Randaak's has them in viton. For a test I stacked o rings two deep on my brothers bike but I have the carbs off right now.

Big brother lost the keys again so I sent in an order for two new ones here. Oh my,,,, With a little luck it will start and run now. I think it may need a battery too.

Fill it with gas and slowly blow air into the petcock with your mouth, while looking down into the filler hole. See if there are bubbles anywhere but the intake screens.

I didn't do the blow into the petcock because I was afraid it would end up on facebook. Seriously though I'll try that with a length of hose. I did barely get it running, made it to the gas station, filled the tank and rode the bejezzus out of it. It ran perfectly so I've decided to replace the tank. A guy on the cb750 site said he has a really nice one but he doesn't have enough posts to get a PM.

I put the IV bottle on filled it with gas and rode through the neighborhood. It runs equally as bad this way. A digital voltmeter after the ignition switch shows 13.4 volts running down the street. I have the borrowed 1100 carbs it ran to Sturgis last year with for another test. I'm about sick of removing the carbs. I'm starting to think of parting it out, I don't have the cash right now to leave it with my favorite bike shop but that might be the answer. Hopefully someone will buy the cb400F or KZ1000 I have to sell.

Have you looked at the fuel pump? Check pressure and volume. The reason there is a fuel pump is when the fuel gets below a certain point, it will not flow by gravity and needs the pump.

Just thinking out loud.
Keep the faith and keep plugging away. You are very close to having it right

It's a new fuel pump (last year) but it still needs a test, that's up next. It seems I left my fuel pressure gauge in the race car trailer that's in storage already. I have a homemade flow/pressure tester that uses a holley carb jet to make some back pressure. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I stopped fighting the rusty fuel tank, it had sediment that wasn't red and was hard to see in a filter, the filters were plugging up quickly and I had zip tied a square magnet to one way too tightly. It squeezed the filter, collapsed the filter media and leaked rust into the fresh carbs. Yup I did it.
I replaced the gas tank with an acid washed, cleaned, flushed and lined one. New fuel lines outside and flushed the inner tank tubes. I cleaned the nearly new petcock and fuel pump, had my local GL expert re-clean the carbs and install new float valves. I put it all back together with a new genuine Honda fuel filter. It got up to 40 yesterday and I couldn't resist taking it for a ride. So far so good, It did 12 miles on the four lane and it wasn't too cold, even though I hadn't put the lowers back on the windjammer. It took some cranking to start it since the carbs were empty, overall it ran well and I'm hoping it stays that way. It didn't chug or kick back once so I'm hoping the lean carb symptom is cured.
At one stop the starter clutch didn't engage 3 times in a row, that's a worry. I've used marvel mystery oil to try to remove varnish but didn't like the clutch action. On a trip I added castrol high mileage oil for the detergent action and it worked fine during the rest of the trip.

I rode again today during a brief break in the weather. It ran like new. I'm seriously tickled. Now for a little brake work. I'm thinking it wants new flex lines. I looked at the Galfer SS lines that go from the master direct to the calipers, I have a set of those for an 83 that I got by accident. My sister was looking at an 83 so I didn't return them. Anyway, does anyone have favorite brake lines by any company or type in particular?
