To paint the Engine or not

#1

Post by Jetdr »

So I’m restoring a 76 LTD. I’m not really thinking I will have a concourse bike here but I am doing the best I can to make this bike as presentable as possible. Question is. The engine was a filthy mess when I got the bike torn down. But now after spending 6 or 8 hours cleaning it. I’m thinking it’s looking pretty good. What are thoughts on painting the block? I really don’t want to tear the engine apart just to paint it. The bike only has 22000 miles on it and I have changed the timing belts and all the seals under the water pump housing. Here is before.

Looks good. If that was my bike, I'd be happy with that.

Yup, leave it alone. None of the paints I have found as a reasonable match are fuel proof, so if you get a spill you are back to square 1.

A couple of tips while it's out, if you maybe haven't done them Grease up the kickstart mechanism. Difficult to get to in the bike and notorious for rusting up solid. Change the gearchange seal and the tacho drive seal. Put a new neutral switch in.

If that were my engine I would leave it. It looks almost factory new. If you do decide to paint it I suggest using Eastwoods ceramic Aluminum engine paint. Very close to original color and if you use the activator they sell it is fuel proof.

One more thing to do before you put the engine back in. Pull the oil screen cover, clean the screen and take about 2mm off the screws. This will allow you to pull the cover easier in the future. The manual says to "Flex the frame" to get it out with the engine in the bike. Also might help tp get allen head screws for this cover. It will not be concourse but. Also put anti-sieze on the screws before you put the screws back in.

I would also leave the engine the way it is. It looks great.

While the engines out, have you checked the clutch plates. Believe you can do it with the engine in the frame, but why struggle. I know you said it's only done 22000 miles, but are you sure that mileage refers to that engine!

The water pump is the original one. I replaced the seals and o rings and check for play on the pump. All seemed to be tight as new.

I am making an order tomorrow so I’ll include the clutch housing gasket and check the plates.

This is the original Engine for this bike. The bike has never had anything taken off of it. The engine serial number matches the vin codes for this bike.

The oil screen was almost perfectly clean. It’s actually amazing how clean and new everything looks inside the engine. The pictures you can see of the head rockers are untouched. I took the valve covers off and that’s how clean it was inside the engine.
