Clutch Sticking Up

So I went riding today and everything was fine, but when I got home, the clutch lever had no resistance and wouldn't engage. I thought I snapped the cable but after inspection, it's getting stuck up. I had to use a flathead to push it backdown but when I engage it again after a few times, it locks up as if it's being pulled to far up. I've adjusted the cable in a zillion ways but to no avail. Any one had this issue and/or no the solution?

Ugh, I just want to ride!

From his other posts, it appears to be a '78 - '79 GL1000 that was running well enough to pull into his shop in late July. It sounds to me like the gross adjustment at the engagement shaft is incorrect.

I believe your clutch plates are worn. If each plate wears as little as .005 inch then the total thickness of the stack will exceed the movement range of the clutch lever, which depresses the carrier by about 1/16 inch, by way of three little balls riding in tapered grooves. in your case (as in mine a few years back) the balls run off the ends of the grooves and stay in this position till you push the lever back. new plates will fix the problem. I thought of adding an extra plate but never tried it.
i finally made it past the junkyard dogs!!

To clarify, it’s the clutch lift lever that gets stuck up... yeah backyardbob, I may have to tackle a clutch plate job... :insert long sigh:

This happened to me. I had no clue how the thing worked so towed it home to take a leisurely looksee. Sure enough the mechanism had moved too far. I readjusted everything and it's all been working ever since. So maybe you don't need to do anything extreme. But what do I know.

Same thing happened to me on my 78, many years ago. Re adjust the cable, by the book. Been good every since. (15+ years). The bottom end adjustment had gone over center. Give it a try,....nothing to lose
