GL1100 motor swap... Advice? Gotchas to avoid?

#1

Post by drumgod »

Hi all,

Long time no see. So my '81 got bit by the broken timing belt thing. It was on the list of stuff to get around to but of course I didn't. I now have a title-less '80 for a motor donor. It's only got 10K on the odo but it has been converted to a single carb setup so I'm not sure how much to trust that. It's running though. Right now the plan is to pull the '80 motor and drop my '81 carbs on it. I have belts on order (gates t274) and am going to do the water pump as well...

So, having not been "keeping up" with the NGW world, are there any "gotchas" I should be looking out for? Compatibility issues or order of operation mistakes I need to avoid? I'm off to do some reading... Thanks guys.

Thanks. Read those yesterday. Not much to the threads I could find. It looks like the neutral switch location is the same for 80-81. That's good to know. Gearing the same? I appreciate any input. Thanks guys.

One difference is ignition coils and a ballast on 82-83. 80-81 timing was 13 degrees, then went back to 10 degrees. Carbs were slightly different too.

You have the right years for a seamless swap.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
