Ditto on the two previous posts. What is your cleaning method?
Goldwings don't accelerate, they gain inertia.
1978 GL1000 - almost stock - needs a head replaced, parts are ready to install!
1979 GL1000 - Winter project/parts bike - custom "Busted"
1983 GL1100 Standard- raised from the dead and back to organ donor status
And the newest acquisition, 1979 XS 650F to be a sidecar tug.

....... or maybe it's just laziness.
I absolutely hate it when I have to do something twice because it wasn't done correctly the first time.
so as a matter of practice, I just try to do my best when wrenching on bikes.
My actual "go to's" for cleaning aluminum involves Brake cleaner, scotchbrite pads and a brass brush.
This one also required a razor knife to scrape off the old gasket because it was almost as if it was epoxied on.
In the end, I guess I do whatever it takes to do the job right.
The head was pretty easy, ultrasonic cleaner and then I glassed the mating surface.

Glass. I thought so. Stuff scares me. Lots of nooks and crannies.

Here's the procedure for cleaning up a head, This method has been around for a long time.
nothing too fancy or high tech.
(I just happen to use a piece of 5/16 glass as my flat surface)

Ahh. Second time I've felt like an idiot on the board today. I thought you meant glass beading. Who needs a machinist when you can true the surface as above! Aluminum is a nice material to work with. I might use this approach as I'll be doing head gaskets on my '78 when the weather shifts in a more humane direction.

I glass bead parts, including heads, all the time. They just get a good bath, or two, afterwards. Followed by compressed air.
