What am I missing with this carb rebuild?

#1

Post by mfnheff »

Just installed my randakk carb kits. Very nice, btw.
Anyway...I still have fuel entering the plenum. It's coming from the #4 cylinder carb. I had this same problem before. The floats are set correctly. I havent replaced the needles. As soon as the bike is running, fuel starts coming in to the plenum from that carb. You can see the fuel come up at the carb throat and hit the plenum floor. What am i missing? Carbs are super clean inside. Floats set. All needles and jets are spotless. And still this...almost enough to make me throw in the towel and stick with rickety single carb bikes.

Float is sticking or the valve is not doing it's job. The only other possibility is the seals between the carb and the plenum.

Big fat oring that seals the passage from plenum fuel rail (?) to carb.

The floats and carb-to-plenum seals leak in different spots. If you remove the slide and cap and use adequate light, you can turn the fuel on to a dry carb and see where it comes from. The carb-to-plenum seals start showing on the plenum side of the throat for the slides. So focus your eyes there first with an occasional glance to the emulsion tubes. It won’t take long. It will pool in the neck of the Venturi. Then it will go where gravity tells it The floats will come up through the emulsion tubes.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I did replace the plenum seal, it was included with the randakk kit. The mating surfaces are flat. At this point, I'm thinking the needle isn't staying closed like it should. As soon as the engine starts you can see the fuel being in to the plenum from the back of the #4 carb

What ericheath said is a good suggestion to locate the source. If there is any crud in the carb to plenum recess where the "O" ring sits it can cause problems. If it's your floats, double check the seats and valve tips. Also check for worn "dimples" in your float tangs where they push against the valve needle. Another possible source of leaks is the float pivot pin tower. They can develop a burr on the side from the float brass wearing against the tower. They should be smooth so the brass sheet metal doesn't catch.

This is why I always use a test tank on my carb rebuilds before they ever get installed on the engine. Do that with the carb tops off and you can see every place that fuel could enter the plenum. You state, " I havent replaced the needles". Sounds like you should replace at least that one. I usually do all four if even just one "needs" it.

I do all of my work in a basement garage, so I don't use gasoline for testing the carbs. I use 91% isopropyl alcohol. Even if some gets left over, it will mix and burn.

Got everything fixed...it's embarrassing what caused the problem. I totally missed something, and it very oblivious as soon as i removed the carb bowl. Everything is good to go, and the bike will make it's first official ride tomorrow..woo!

My brain seems to cramp every time I do timing and start it up with the Crank plug not installed. Bet I have done it 10 or 15 times!

Ha...well...you know how the float needle is supposed to go in the seat? I missed the seat...the needle was behind the seat. Just not paying attention
