Charging system qustions

#1

Post by childintime65 »

I just solved my overcharging problem by running the black regulator wire to the battery as suggested here on several posts. I presently do not have a relay wired in. Do I need this? If I do, what type of relay and how do I wire it in?
Thanks guys, this forum has been a big help to me keeping my 77 and 80 Goldwings on the road.

I just did the same, you do need a relay. The Goldwings forum has specific info on this. I just followed along

From what I've read you do not need a relay because virtually no current flows in that wire.

If I was doing it I would want to make sure so I would connect an ammeter in place of the wire and confirm that for myself. If there is no current when the key is turned Off there is no need for a relay. If there is a measurable current you will need to figure out if it is enough to discharge the battery if the bike is parked for a couple of weeks.

This is a good question, but for my dollar, the OEM has the sense wire to the regulator/rectifier switched through the ignition switch. The relay maintains the original design intent of having power through the sense wire when the ignition switch is turned on and non when the engine is turned off.

There was a time when the sense wire was directly connected to the battery, but it was changed due to connection issues and changed so it was switched through the ignition switch. Here's a good article regarding this: http://www.electrosport.com/technical-r ... stem-works

Just my nickles worth, no more pennies in Canada.

Cheers

Well, first there was the Canadian Pound but in 1858 they decided to follow the US and adopt metric currency......

Personally, I don't miss the 1¢ coin ( which was never officially called a penny in either the US or Canada). But $1 and $ 2 coins are a pain, especially when you start to walk funny because you have a bunch of them in your wallet.....
