Water pump leak. Again

#1

Post by Steevensi »

Hi
Last fall I had coolant leaking out of the weep hole.
So I changed the water pump and all of the seals and gaskets that could be changed while doing that.
I did not rode the bike after that cause snow came in early.

This winter, oil started dripping from the weep hole....
And I know it’s my fault. I knew I torqued the water pump bolts too much and probably damaged the crush washers...

Anyway. If I have oil coming out the weep hole but no oil in the coolant, I should be able just to replace the crush washers and call it a day right?

I have removed the water pump last night and will be putting it back in tomorrow because I just got new oem crush washer.

Cheers

what rb said. if you didn't replace the oil seal and o ring that go between the water pump and oil pump..that may be the culprit.

I am glad I am not the only one who has to redo this. oil can be from..... seal in pump..... crush washers..... O-ring

I have found it was almost always the O-ring

I’ve changed all of the seals and the gaskets when I did this job. I think there was above 12 pieces in the kit I used.
I know for sure the 2 gaskets around the water pump has been changed.

My bet are the crush washers. They were really... crushed when I took them out. Easy to believe oil find a way around them.

what I have found is that it is really... really.... really easy to pinch the O-ring when you put the pump into the housing

I slather Vaseline on the o-ring before I put the pump back in. It seems to work..

is this picture from an 82? I,m pretty sure the pump doesn't look like that...
But anyway, I changed everything that could be changed when I reassembled the front end of the engine.

I don't see how I could pinch the small seal (on the oil side). You push on the water pump to install it so the seal is squezed in there.
The one that could cause trouble is the big one on the coolant side. This one is easy to roll out of it's groove.
Or maybe I did not understand what you meant??

the one easiest to pinch is the one in the groove, and yes, it would be coolant leaking there. Still goes back to seal on water pump-oil side.... crush washers.... or O-ring for an oil leak
