Wiring woes.

#1

Post by Wangthang »

Here's the deal. I am having lots of problems with fuses, and connectivity in general, on my 77 Wing. I only run the basics headlight, brake, and tail, usually. On this bike I only have the usual plus turn signals. There's so much unnecessary wiring on this bike, wouldn't the best option be to just rewire the bike? I mean, I have eliminated all the reserve wiring hardware, and still have huge amounts of wiring.

I re wired my 78. Every wire. added relays, and other special circuits. Lots of fun.....but I like that stuff. A little time consuming, but new wire is always better then 30 year old stuff

I chucked the original wiring on my '75 and wired from scratch. I added all the stuff I wanted including kickstand safety switch and got rid of the 'black box'. I reduced current through the handlebar switches using relays. All inputs and outputs go through the left side of the fake tank. You might find it useful to just use parts of my wild scheme. You can see most of the wiring story here: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=64777
I can email you a pdf of the wiring diagram if you're interested.

If I don't pick up another project, maybe rewire this coming winter. Frame off paint, etc..

The '75-'77 wiring harness has a whole bunch of extra wires because of the Reserve Lighting Unit. The RLU is known to be so unreliable that Clymer included instructions on bypassing it. If I was going to rewire a '75-'77 'Wing I would use the '78-'79 drawing.

Blowing main fuse, intermittently. Left me beside the road today "True story". I found a sliver of crumpled can, and put it under the fuse, and it runs...lol.

Well that's a bit risky. Your wires are now the fuse.

I'd replace that with a blade fuse first and if that blows too then chase the problem.
