New Spark Units

#1

Post by chewy999 »

I bought some new spark units, but had a problem fitting them, or so I thought.

As you can see below, the new one on the left is a slightly different design to the old one, but it meant they could not be fitted in the same way, back to back, pointing down, as the mounting point was to wide to allow fitment.

After a little head scratching and thinking along the lines of longer bolts and spacers, I had a idee2 moment!

And this is how I did it. Placing the units at right angles, they fit back to back with the original bracket and bolt, and my view is that because the rear of each unit has 'clear space', they shouldn't overheat to much, but only time will tell.

Now that may all seem blatantly obvious to most of you, but I was pleased with myself!

Nice workaround. And, whoa! I see shadows in England! Sun's out! Time to go riding!

Yes, that's exactly how I fitted my new David Silver units, and they have been fine so far for 2 years :)

I only changed the OEM units as the black epoxy had melted out and I thought they were causing problems. The problem was a cracked HT plug cap.

I put the old OEM units back in just to test them, and they actually still work fine lol

Good work. Fit like a bug in a rug. For fun, here is the wiring on my 81.. :) The igniters are mismatched as I burnt one of the new units out and am awaiting a replacement.

The old ones I had had the old black epoxy melted out, and I'd already refilled that with aroldite epoxy resin. I daresay the old ones are still 'fine', but I just wanted to change them for modern units.
