Tank Removal GL1100

#1

Post by psteichen »

Hi, I'm brand new to the forum, and brand new to Goldwings as well. I've always wanted one, but never had room in the budget. Well, I got a great deal at an auction the other day. An '81 GL1100 for $350 including tax and transfer!

I hope it's a good deal. At that price my expectations are low, and mostly I picked it up as a project for my kid and I to tinker with. Carbs are gummy as heck. Pops a little, but won't start. Hasn't been registered since 2012, so I need to remove the carb bank.

And that's my first problem. I can't figure out how to get the tank off! (well not the tank actually....turns out the tank isn't a tank, but whatever you call the thing that looks like a tank and has the fuses, fuel filler, and radiator reserve tank in it) I figured out that there are two bolts holding it in the rear, but something is still holding up front, and I can't see where.

Thanks for any advice. I'm sure I'll be needing more advice in the future.

Welcome to the forum!

It has been a little while since I played with an 1100, but I believe there are also two bolts that hold down the front of your shelter.

You can carefully pull the shelter over the stuff under it. The 1100 is actually a two piece set up.

There are two 10mm bolts on the lower front corners like wingrider says.
There are also 2 under the seat so you need to remove it to get at them.
There are two allen head bolts on the sides of the seat near the back.
Remove those, slide the seat back until you can pick it up clear of the bike.
I just got done putting my shelter and seat back on about an hour ago.

If it's an Interstate with the factory fairing, you can just reach the two front bolts through the first opening in the fairing 'lower.' A flashlight helps...

Unless you need to remove the shelter for some other reason, it does not have to come off to pull the carb rack.

Do yourself a favor and buy a shop manual. It shows how to remove the faux shelter plus a lot of other good info.

Yes, four bolts. But as stated too, the shelter does not have to come off.

+1 on getting a manual, the Haynes manual is a good starting point.

If you can get to the four bolts holding the shelter on, it does make the whole job of removing the carbs easier. Take photos as you go, especially where cables and wires go to and from.

Welcome to the site from the UK, all the help you need is here, just ask away. One of the most important tasks for a new owner, is to change the timing belts, but get that manual.
