Startup blues.

#1

Post by Wangthang »

Now that i have my old 77 wing running, i have a problem. She smokes out the left pipe. There is a slight wetness of oil on the plugs on cylinders 2 and 4. The left pipe does not have as much sound as the right side also. Bike has been sitting 10 years. Should i take it out and ride it a little, or what? It's killing me in the shop.

Ride it and bed the rings back in. Sometimes the rings will even get stuck in the piston and will need to have the stink run out of it to free them up.

If it still smokes, then worry about it. But I wouldn’t quite yet.

I'd use Randakk's technique for firing up a long dormant engine if you aren't doing so yet. It can save a lot of headaches.

Yeah. The left bank quit smoking. Put about 15 miles on it.

Not an uncommon issue for these old girls. Seems sitting on the side stand can aggravate it.

Still smoking, and oil in the left pipe. Left side has very little sound, or air pressure as compared to the right side. Still only about 40 miles or so on it. I will do a compression check tomorrow.

Do you park it on the side stand or the center stand? Wings and BMWs (anything boxer) can smoke on the left hand side when they spend any time on the side stand.

I have 150 psi on the left bank, and 130 on the right bank. Both coils are firing because cylinders 1, and 3 run good. The Weber Carb. has two individually tuned runners. I'm lost. HELP.

Ride it! It might take some good long miles and/ or several heat/ cool cycles to get those numbers up. My 1100 started out with 110-120 psi for all four cylinders. I just ride...

Does it feel like it has plenty of power? I would also suggest riding it a bit. How many miles were on the bike, and how long did it sit? I can't quite recall those answers from your build thread.

Did you replace any of the valve stem seals? Does seem a tad odd that only one side is oily, but not to surprising that it is the left. The compression (on the left side)seems better than some that have sat for a while, and that may even come up a bit with more run time.

It sat 10 years. The carbs. aren't dialed in exactly but I'm happy if It won't run any faster...lol. I was wondering about the valve stem seals. The odometer said 14 thou. Probably 114 thousand.
