Loose stator

#1

Post by Dirty Dave »

My diagnosis of the loud rattle in my engine was correct. My trusty stethoscope located the noise from the rotor/stator area of my 79 Wing. My apologies to Electrosport as I had thought the stator coil had come loose but it was user error on my part. All 3 stator bolts were loose enough to make rotor magnet contact with the stator.

Here is my question. I can't find torque specs or an mention of Loctite used for the 3 bolts. How do y'all mount the stator?
It had lasted two years before failing. :-?

Check here: https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic ... 90#p424090

If that does not cover it then use a standard torque from here: https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic ... 96#p453196

And yes i would definitely use some thread locker

Turns out the screws are stock and Loctite will start to degrade after 350 degrees F.

How hot does our engine oil get?

Waaayyy less than 350. I'd say 250-275 max. And that's on a hot day. Usually less than 230.

Thanks desert refugee. I'm not fooling around this time and will Loctite the 3 screws holding the stator just in case.
Next time I have to pull the engine again I'm putting pedals on the Wing.

BTW We were tied for motorcycle ownership but you one upped me with the CBX-Z...........

Looking at stator replacement videos online nobody is using Loctite or torquing the screws or bolts more than hand tight.

Guess I just got lucky.

Well DD, I wasn't really looking. It sort of found me. Not a contest. Just life.

The stator I bought through Randakk's website goes in so tight I had to worry it in place using the 3 screws. It's going nowhere, impossible to get loose. I also used Loctite on the screws just in case they decided to go for a walk.

Down side is if I ever have to do this again, I'll hafta use explosives to remove the stator.

I hope this seemingly unique problem helps someone else out there. I haven't read of anyone else having a stator come loose. Maybe I should keep my RPMs under 13K..........

I figure since I have to use the impact screwdriver to get those screws loose, a couple of good taps on it to tighten them should be about right...

Thought of that Bob.

I get nervous with steel screws into aluminium though. I have enough Heli coils in the Wing. I'm sure it would work but with my luck with wrenching...................

I wonder if there's room to use regular M6 flange head screws? Then you could just torque them normally.

Thought of that as well and yes, there is room. The stator went on so tight that I decided to stick with stock screws.
They seem to hold for everyone else. I was also too lazy to go to the store.

Thanks for the tip regardless from a fellow Canadian. I have until next Spring to put the engine back in.
I decided to save $586 CDN for the plate and just ride the Valkyrie this season. If I fix the Wing too soon I will want to ride it.
